The guide to not get stuck in the cold calling trap, read cases efficiently, and use your time in law school classes like a pro.

Every year, thousands of law students start law school thinking they have to memorize every detail of a case in order to perform during a cold call. And it seems that everybody is certain that this performance determines how well they’ll do on law school exams.

Errr.

Welcome to the first law school mindf*ck.

Cold calling and effectively preparing for law school exams have nothing to do with each other. What matters is how you read the cases, how well you understand the rules within them, and how effectively you integrate all that info before the big moment: law school exams (which btw, are unique on their own).

And well, since law school doesn’t truly teach you how to get As on exams, you start directing all your attention and resources to the instant threat that is cold calling and start doing what everybody else seems to be doing.

You over-read.

You say yes to things that do not directly correlate with your success on exams; then resent yourself for it because heck, you haven't finished all your readings (again). And as the classic perfectionist and overachiever law student (me tooz!), you won’t move until the next subject because you haven’t “briefed” X cases properly; so, you continue to feel behind ("Why am I always catching up?!").

And of course... you keep hearing this word: O-U-T-L-I-N-I-N-G. And like everybody else, you start obsessing about it: "I should be outlining right away."  Yet, in reality, you're basically transcribing words (and rules) that you have not yet understood. Second law school mindf*ck. Feels familiar?

Well, if you’re struggling with any of the above, (1) you are not alone; and (2) then this guide is for you.

If you think about it, law school is a game of allocating your resources (i.e., your attention and efforts) in a universe where you have a huge workload and a limited amount of time to learn it all. ⏳ Thus, if you don't allocate intelligently, you risk being out of the game (because remember, the system is designed so that you're playing against other players).

Hence why it is CRUCIAL to know what to focus on and where to direct your time and energy. Or in other words, to know how the law school game actually works. 🎯

If you arrive in a new city and you happen to have a GPS, you’ll probably get to your destination way faster than if you were just guessing roads here and there, right? Well, law school doesn’t deviate much from that analogy. If you know, you know

By the time you're done with this course, you’ll avoid over-reading, overcome the cold calling mindf*ck, identify the relevant details in your case readings, take effective notes in class, and improve your understanding of the material. You'll feel waaay more confident because you'll know how to play the game. 🌝

So, ready to read less and learn more? 🙂

Testimonials

“Esperanza is a wealth of knowledge regarding all things law school. From strategic reading, to outlining and exams, she knows it all. Although I worked in the legal field prior to law school, I had no idea just how different the academic experience would be. Preparing for final exams with Warrior in Law was crucial to my academic success during my first year of law school.
